Dennis Mathagu Muchira is the newest addition to the Fellows of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) after successfully completing the Fellowship Admissions Course in March 2022.
The additional certification will now come in handy as he commences a career at Fortitude Reinsurance Corporation where he will be responsible for reinsurance and M&A deal sourcing, deal execution, and portfolio management.
Having joined Fortitude Re in Bermuda this week, Mr Muchira will combine his actuarial, strategy, and management skillset in a Corporate Development role supporting the company’s growth strategy and value creation.
After completing his high school studies at the prestigious Starehe Boys’ Centre and School in 2002, Mr Muchira joined University of Nairobi for his Actuarial Science degree.
Thereafter, he visited New York-based Columbia University and pursued a Master of Science in Actuarial Science program before proceeding to PwC in New York as an actuarial associate in Life (re)insurance where he gained skills in assurance and advisory.
In 2010, Mr Muchira started to undertake SOA’s professional papers. Four and a half years later, he took a break to attend a fully sponsored MBA at Oxford Business School.
I wanted to complement my actuarial skillset with strategy and general management skills.
After business school, he joined McKinsey & Company, Nairobi’s office, to understand “how businesses work from the top of the house”. Between 2018 until 2019, he developed skills in growth strategy, digital strategy, and transformations focusing on banks and insurers in Africa.
Having garnered the desired skillset, Mr Muchira traced his steps back to the actuarial profession, joining Athene Life Re in Bermuda, working in valuation, reporting, and ALM support on $50bn of reinsured annuities while continuing with SOA papers.
In 2022, he completed the papers and was also awarded Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA) certification. “The exams felt like a career loose end that I was committed to tie up,” he adds.
